How to Care for Your Denture or Partial

Daily cleaning, caring for your gums, what to do if your mouth becomes sore, and more.

Daily Cleaning

  • Before cleaning, be sure to fill the sink with water or lay a soft towel down.  Dentures and partials may break if they fall and hit a hard surface.
  • Rinse denture/partial under warm water after each meal to remove loose food debris.

Note: Boiling or excessively hot water can cause the denture or partial to warp and not fit properly.

What can I use to clean my denture or partial?

  • Dentures and partials should be brushed daily with a soft toothbrush or denture brush.
  • They can also be brushed with warm water, soap or denture paste.
  • Cleaning tablets can be used while the denture or partial is soaking in water. These help remove light stains and loosen plaque buildup.  Make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions because each type and brand is different from the next!
  • After soaking, be sure to rinse thoroughly under warm water before re-inserting into the mouth.
  • Mouthwash may be used after rinsing with water to give a fresh taste and feeling!

Caring for Your Mouth and Gums

  • Always keep your denture or partial in water or denture solution when you're not wearing it. Otherwise, the acrylic will dry out over time, becoming brittle and not fitting as well.
  • Remove dentures and partials before you go to sleep at night.
  • If your wear a partial: it is recommended that you use a separate, soft toothbrush from your denture brush to clean your natural teeth.

If Your Mouth Becomes Sore or Irritated

  • Sore spots may appear as a small mark or wound on the gum tissues.
  • Sore spots in your mouth may occur if the denture or partial is putting too much pressure on a particular site in the mouth.
  • If you are experiencing sore spots or irritation visit your dentist so they can make adjustments to your denture or partial to relieve the pressure.
  • Never try to adjust or repair your denture or partial yourself. This could cause further damage and negatively affect how it fits in your mouth.
  • To soothe your gums, remove your denture or partial and rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.
  • Coming in to get your adjustment make sure to re-insert your denture or partial the morning of your appointment.  This makes it much easier for the dentist to find the places of pressure and irritation and make the appropriate adjustments for your best fit.
